I recently stumbled upon a supremely obscure album by the relatively unknown artist Minteer that I’m coming around on. ‘Calling All Aliens’ is your textbook DIY album, but with a very surprising amount of polish and musical cohesiveness. Minteer’s title track ‘Calling All Aliens’ opens with the bluesiest of blues guitar channeling both The Animals and Raconteurs in a sprawling 6+ minute musical overture. Slight vocal distortions and simplistic yet crisp percussion is what drives much of the album, and there’s a consistency throughout the album’s 12 tracks insofar as every track is consistently different from the last. You don’t have to look too closely to see the fingerprints of Bowie, Beck, The Black Keys and just about every project ever put out by Jack Black all over this album. It pays homage to its predecessors, but is still uniquely original. Where Minteer truly flourishes is with his knack for lyrics that are both celebratory and pure weird. It’s Blues. It’s Classic Rock. It’s Alternative. Actually, I’m not entirely sure what it is, but I like it.
